completedthermometerSelander Challenge Met!

The Friends’ fundraising had a big boost this year thanks to a successfully completed challenge grant of $50,000 from Robert Selander in memory of his parents, Gloria and Herb Selander. The Selanders were enthusiastic Mashpee Library supporters and Mrs. Selander was a former Mashpee Library Director.

The Friends raised $50,000 towards the Selander matching challenge with the help of a special bequest from the estate of Mashpee resident Dottie Bottos, plus a very successful Gala and Auction to celebrate the library’s fifth year.

Friends Establish Endowment for Library

The Friends of the Mashpee Library set up an endowment for the library in December. “We expect the endowment to grow and attract major donations that will ensure our library has the extra funding it needs to serve the community well for years to come,” said Ann Macdonald, President of the Friends’ Board.

Contributions to the Friends are tax-deductible. The endowment funds are invested to earn interest, under the management of an Investment Committee. The endowment was initiated by Ceil Sneider, outgoing president of the Friends and endorsed by the Library Trustees.

Chip Bishop Honored as ‘Friend of the Year’

The Friends presented its first “Friend of the Year” award Jan. 5, to local author Chip Bishop, in recognition of his encouragement, wisdom, and patience while working with the Friends Executive Board. An experienced political and communication strategist with a lifetime of achievements, including working as a campaign and administration aide to President Jimmy Carter, Chip guided the Friends to expand its reach, and to raise public awareness of the Mashpee Public Library’s free resources and services.

Chip is a former Library Trustee, and author of The Lion and the Journalist: The Friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and Joseph Bucklin Bishop, (New York Times e-book bestseller in March 2014), and Quentin & Flora: A Roosevelt and a Vanderbilt in Love During the Great War.
