Year End Message from the Executive Board

Dear Friends:

This was a successful year for the Friends of Mashpee Library, which raised more than $120,000 (so far) for the library, including a $50,000 challenge grant from the Selander family. This is the 30th anniversary year of the Friends.

At its annual meeting Nov. 5, the group elected new officers and honored past president Ceil Sneider for her years of dedication to the library. The new president, Ann Macdonald, noted that Ceil “had set the bar high for fundraising, and for successful activities.”

“We thank the members of the community who helped us by contributing and by participating in our programs–the Tech Campaign, Licks for the Library, Mini-Golf at the Library, and the highly successful anniversary auction and gala in June,” Macdonald said. “We already purchased iPads for the Library from funds raised in our Tech Campaign, and we will continue technology funding, including a ‘genius bar,'” she said.

Funding from the Friends enables the Library to buy materials and equipment beyond the budget supplied by government agencies. For example, museum passes and rental books are purchased by the Friends, in addition to other books, media, and special summer reading materials for the children’s program.

“The Selander Family challenge grant was a big boost to our fundraising efforts,” Macdonald reported. “This $50,000 challenge was in memory of former Mashpee residents and Library supporters Herb and Gloria Selander. Mrs. Selander was a past director of the Mashpee Library.”

“Next week is ‘Dining for Books’ week, where seven local restaurants will donate a percentage of your tab to the Friends of the Library when you eat or take out and show your library card, and I hope the local community will turn out,” Macdonald said. “Check our website or pick up a leaflet at the library for details.”

Other elected officers of the Friends include Vice President Carolyn Markowski, Treasurer Leslie Marsh, Corresponding Secretary Bette Hanson, and Recording Secretary Marje Hecht.

Annual dues are due in January, and we now offer a “Lifetime Membership” of $100.
